No, mama! I’m not talking about a weight-loss routine! Though it’s always great to be moving and grooving, this glow-up is all about glowing up the assets your currently have. Why should we as mothers try glowing up, you say? A part from looking incredible, think about feeling better! This mom glow up routine has changed my life, and I want to share it with you so it can change yours!
Personal Development
Now, it’s not all about the outward beauty. That stuff helps, but it isn’t sustainable if that’s all we’re focused on. The most important part of this entire mom glow up project is working on who you are on the inside. I’m not talking about taking a bunch of self-help books that sometimes go too far to push selfishness. Selfishness is an icky vice that won’t help you in this mom glow up. No friend, there are far more important things to be working on inside ourselves to make this mom glow up a success.
I’ve been studying my Bible daily (or as daily as I can!). Things that have changed in my own heart from this include: Humility, Gratitude, Kindness, Gentleness, and Selflessness. We do this mom glow up not for us to brag or flaunt anything. Mama, we do this mom glow up for you to be a better wife, mother and friend to those around you.
What point is there to look amazing on the outside but to be lonely and ugly on the inside? Beauty truly comes from within. When you work on your heart and show up ready everyday looking amazing, you do wonders for those around you. Your husband feels more inspired himself to work harder and be better, your kids have an incredible woman to look up to, and those around you see the value in what you do and ask you, how?
Drink. Water.
Girl, get it together. If you were like me, drinking water desperately when it touches your lips for the first time in days, you need to switch it up! Here’s my tip to get you drinking more: get a pretty water bottle with a straw. It weirdly makes a world of difference when you have your own, aesthetic water bottle.
Drinking water is the foundation of this glow-up. Everything stems from it. Better hair, better skin, better feel! If there’s anything you need to do if you take nothing else from this post: DRINK. WATER!
Eat More Fiber.
This doesn’t necessarily mean eat more salads. Goodness, please don’t just eat salads. Eating more fiber does wonders to bloating that might happen in your body. But fiber can be found in more foods than just a salad. You can eat root veggies, add chia seeds and flax seeds into your oatmeal’s and yogurts or smoothies, eat fermented foods like kimchi and sauerkraut, etc.
But here’s the kicker. Fiber doesn’t work as well unless our drinking enough water. Otherwise, you’ll get all clogged up anyway even if it’s all fiber! This is why the first tip is so important.
Glow Up That Wardrobe.
Honestly, your wardrobe might not be doing you any favours. You don’t want to be walking around in clothes that are either too big or too small, nor do you want to have clothes with rips, stains and tears on them! Also, why do so many of us still hold onto clothes we hate wearing?
You really have to be brutal with yourself here if we want this mom glow up and clear out the clothes that just aren’t going to cut it anymore. We only want the clothes that fit us beautifully and make us feel incredible.
On top of this, you might need to invest in some new clothes. I used to be a thrift store girly who just bought whatever seemed okay. Here’s the thing though, you end up buying cheap clothes that start to stretch or tear easily and you ended up wasting money! You need to either look for quality products at the thrift store, and dedicate the time to it, or invest in great quality new clothes.
How you dress makes a huge impact on how you feel about yourself.
Start Face Massaging Today!
This one absolutely blew my mind. I saw a video on Pinterest about this model who massages her face every morning because her face gets puffy. I’m looking at her and I’m thinking, but she looks great. She starts the face massages and by the end of the video her entire face CHANGED! I started doing more research on it and found more girls completely transforming their faces.
In a world where we’re always looking down at our phones, often times fluid gets stuck in our faces. This causes our faces to get puffy. When you start face massaging, you begin a process of pushing fluid out of your face and thinning out your face but also giving it a bit of a lift! I started with a puffy face, puffy eyes, low eyebrows and a double chin (and I honestly wasn’t really overweight or anything). When I started massaging my face, my eyebrows were lifted, my face and eyes were thinned and depuffed and my double chin was practically gone!
This is the link to the face massage I used for a month which got me my crazy results and started this whole mom glow up process!
Learn How To Do Your Hair.
I have curly hair, so when you don’t do your hair, it gets evidently frizzy. The fizziness honestly just makes me look sloppy, especially when all I do is throw my hair up in a messy bun. This is why I give myself a lot of time to get ready in the morning because it involves working on my hair and really trying to make it nice. I don’t do much, maybe a braid, or overnight curls, or just a refresh of my curls. But the DIFFERENCE I feel when my hair is done is incredible! This was big difference in my mom glow up.
Start With Simple Makeup.
Honestly, you don’t even need to wear makeup if you really don’t want to. I add a touch of mascara, lightly fill in my eyebrows, and add some blush and that’s my whole makeup routine. I just add little enhancements here and there to make me feel prettier. I’ve never felt pretty with a load of makeup on my face, and I honestly don’t think it’s a valuable use of my time to do that anyway. With this mom glow up, my goal was really just to stay consistent daily with putting on just a touch of makeup to really make myself feel ready. It was a small form of intention for my day with my makeup.
Keep Up With Your Hygiene.
As a mom, sometimes it’s hard to think about yourself. Especially when it’s the first few weeks of motherhood, you forget when the last time was that you showered.
How we present ourselves also has a big effect on how you feel about yourself. When you’re dousing the deodorant and perfume just so you don’t smell your B.O., you know you’ve got a problem going on. I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t shower everyday growing up and that habit bled into my adult life. But my new showering routine has made me more excited to hop in the shower everyday! Plus, effective showering helps a lot with body odour. A simple slipping of soap of your skin and calling it a day just doesn’t cut it.
Grabbing myself a pair of scrubbing gloves and a scrubbing brush was what changed the game for me. I felt like I got a deep clean when I used those tools to clean myself, and I wouldn’t need deodorant for the day! And it barely adds extra time to your showering. If there’s anything you should get from this post, be sure to add effective showering to your mom glow up.
Exercise.
Like I said in the beginning, this glow up isn’t about losing weight. But, it is about a general health, and general health involves physical activity.
I had asked my naturopath about what the ideal healthy physical activity looks like. I had heard around me that big HIIT workouts everyday for 45 minutes a day are the ideal. Perhaps if you’re drastically trying to lose weight or training for something. But when it comes to general health for the typical mom, this stuff is neither effective nor helpful in our busy lives.
My naturopath said that natural activity should be intentional. For example, going for daily walks, planting a gardening (squatting), cleaning and cooking, going up and down the stairs, carrying things, these are all activities that we do or should be doing daily. We’re moving, but it’s not overly strenuous, but it is good for you! Try not to find loopholes to get around natural activity, but rather invite it in and embrace it.
Most of us don’t live on farms or do heavy work like our ancestors did. But that was really great natural exercise we used to do. Nowadays, the equivalent to that is using weights. Again, I’m not saying you need to do heavy lifting and lose weight or anything, but I am saying to lift some weights. It’s super good for our bodies to be moving like that and to get our heart rate up a bit.
You’ll feel so much better, you’ll get stronger slowly, you’ll live longer, and you’ll see the difference on the outside (not just weight, but skin, hair, etc.!).
Get Undergarments That Fit.
This may seem silly, but I didn’t realize how much this would help in my mom glow up. Every time I’ve ever gone to a bra store like Victoria’s Secret or PINK, I always come out with a bra that the attendant said fit me, but didn’t at all! I’ve always been an A cup, but my ribcage had always been bigger than the maximum 36. But somehow, I always walked out of the bra store with a 36B.
I never felt comfortable in the bras I bought so I ended up just defaulting to sports bras. But you can’t wear a sports bra with a strapless dress, or with a low top. It looks messy. So, I would then just default to t-shirts and not try with my style.
Thank GOODNESS for wearpepper.com for creating bras for small chested women like me! When I tried on my bras for the first time, I nearly cried. I felt so feminine and beautiful and finally felt confident to wear all the dresses and tops I’d been too insecure to try! It may seem silly, but having the right undergarments are the foundation for your style.
This mom glow up has honestly helped in so many ways. I still struggle with that mom pouch, and I’ve always been so insecure to look at myself in the mirror. But this change from the inside out helped me to feel much more confident in myself and to be better for those around me. Good luck on your mom glow up adventure!
